Gateway
Gateway is a government initiative that helps high school students transition from school to work. The programme gives students a taste of the working world while they are at school, combining on-job experience with structured learning.
Our Gateway offering is split between our specialist trades which are Electrical, Scaffolding, Cranes, Plumbing Gasfitting and Drainlaying and Project Management, Governance, Regulatory Practice, Security and Business Management.
Te Pūkenga is responsible for workplace training in more than 20 industries. Through Gateway, the schools and Te Pūkenga together can build and maintain a pipeline of talented young people to keep these industries flourishing.
Gateway is perfect for senior high school students who are committed to taking the first steps into their career. It’s also a great opportunity for businesses to promote themselves to potential future staff, while educating them about the career options on offer.
Through the Gateway programme, Te Pūkenga works with its industries to:
- Support students into their industry of choice
- Educate them about workplace training
- Provide workplace materials and advice for both students and teachers
- Keep industries buoyant with a pipeline of young and skilled talent

This is paid by the school gateway programme.
Meet Caleb, Apprentice Plumber, Gasfitter and Drainlayer
Caleb knew he wanted to find a career that wasn’t stuck in an office. He signed up to our Schools Gateway programme with a plumbing company and he’s now 4 years in. Caleb was offered an apprenticeship with Harbour City Plumbing. He’s now almost fully qualified, with his apprenticeship due to finish later this year.
“The people at EarnLearn have helped me all the way through, they really care and help to motivate me.”
Caleb loves being able to learn on the job, and earn a wage while he’s learning. He doesn’t need a student loan, and pays for his apprenticeship weekly, so it’s affordable.
