Six new learners in the Far North have taken up the opportunity to support their local community by training to install residential water tanks through a unique programme.
EarnLearn is thrilled to be a part of the programme, set up by Te Aupōuri Iwi Development Trust, and Te Hiku Iwi Development Trust (THIDT), which, through Tupu Plumbing, based in Kaitaia, trains local youth in the plumbing, drainage and construction skills required to install water tanks in the homes of local residents.
Tanks are supplied through the Puna Wai Ora – Te Hiku Drought Relief programme to improve the quality and supply of water in the region.
EarnLearn, with construction training provider BCITO, has supported the initiative with a Limited Credit Programme of unit standards in plumbing, drainage and construction skills so those working on the tank installations have their new skills officially recognised.
Each intake of learners works with Tupu Plumbing for a year. The first intake graduated from the programme in October having installed 126 water tanks around the Far North. The new cohort of six learners has begun the programme and has installed eight water tanks on local properties, with about another 125 on their schedule to install over the next year.
