Mobile Elevating Work Platforms

Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs) are a crucial part of many work sites, providing a safe and easy way for workers to reach heights. Whether you’ve spent years using these machines or are completely new to them, it’s essential you know how to operate them correctly and safely.

There is a range of independent MEWP training courses available throughout New Zealand, catering to different skill levels and types of MEWPs. The courses provide the knowledge and skills needed to operate MEWPs effectively and safely in different working environments.

Why become a MEWP Operator?

Being a trained, competent MEWP Operator can help you reach elevating working positions for your chosen role/career. For instance, as an Electrician you will be a competent to use a MEWP to assist in running wires overhead or as a builder you will be competent to use a MEWP in construction work such as installing ceilings in a new build. Being a competent MEWP operator will assist you in working in many trades areas.

What types of MEWPs are there?

All MEWPs move around on-site to assist you to work safely and productively. There are two categories of MEWPs: Boom and Scissor. 

Boom Lifts

A telescoping device, hinged device, or articulated device or any combination of these used to support a platform/basket on which personnel, equipment and materials may be elevated to perform work. Boom types can be self-propelled, trailer or truck mounted, and come with or without outriggers or stabilisers.

Scissor Lifts

A work platform which can only move in the vertical plane on which personnel, equipment and materials may be elevated to perform work. Unlike the boom type, it has no ability to telescope or rotate. Scissor types can be self-propelled, trailer or truck mounted and come with or without outriggers or stabilisers.

Flexible delivery to suit your needs

Depending on the training provider, you can choose to have the training delivered at their site or at your own place of work. The courses are usually just one day long, making it easy to fit into your workload.

Practical learning

While there is a bit of theory learning involved, it will support the extensive practical training you will receive. The courses are hands-on, getting you on the machines and directly operating them.

Training is delivered in partnership with Hire Industry Association of New Zealand (HIANZ), through their EWP Silvercard Programme.

HIANZ provides first-class training, awareness and education in the safe use of MEWPs, and has trainers located throughout New Zealand delivering Silvercard courses on all types of EWP’s. Their comprehensive courses combine theory and practical training, with valuable one-on-one time to ensure a successful outcome.
