Assessment

We are committed to ensuring that all our learners receive high quality training and are assessed fairly and consistently against national standards.

Assessment involves the collection and recording of evidence that shows a learner’s competence against the unit standards they’re trying to achieve.  This evidence can be gathered through normal day-to-day work, from the workplace/ organisations’ records, from photos, getting confirmation from a supervisor or manager who is acting as a verifier, checking questions answered by the learner and could include verbal discussions.

EarnLearn works with industries to develop learning and assessment material based on a collection of evidence model.

Our Quality Assurance team monitors the quality of assessment and supports assessors across the industries we serve.

Assessors

EarnLearn assessors are qualified, industry experienced experts who work with learners to ensure their skills, experience and hard work are recognised in line with NZQA requirements.

All assessors are registered with EarnLearn and will hold unit standard 4098 (Use standards to assess apprentice performance). We are accredited to offer 4098 Assessor Training courses.

Most assessors are registered with EarnLearn as contract or workplace assessors. Typically contract assessors are independent assessors while workplace assessors are based at the workplace and usually employed by the organisation they are assessing for.

To ensure all registered assessors have sufficient knowledge and skills, assessors are provided with an assessment scope. This scope reflects the experience and qualifications the assessor holds and determines what unit or skill standards they are permitted to assess for EarnLearn learners.

Assessor scope is granted based on NZQA Consent and Moderation Requirements (CMRs). This requires all assessors to meet the same criteria to ensure consistency in assessment practice across all providers.

More information about the CMRs that EarnLearn follows can be found here:

Assessor's Role

Assessors play a key role in supporting learners throughout the training and assessment process.

Assessors review all the evidence from the learner and the verifier and decide whether the learner has the competency to meet the standard. Evidence typically includes the learners’ answers to questions, workplace documents, and verification.

To remain registered with EarnLearn, assessors must remain active by assessing annually, by participating in assessor forums or events, and meeting moderation requirements.

Further information about assessors, roles and responsibilities can be found in our Assessor Guidelines.

Academic Integrity

When a learner presents assessment evidence that is not their own, gathered from another learner’s work, or from any other sources, we call this ‘academic misconduct.’

EarnLearn takes academic misconduct seriously and assessors have a key role in upholding the academic integrity of our assessment process.

Assessors are expected to contact our Quality Assurance team immediately if academic misconduct is suspected.

EarnLearn follows a fair and transparent investigation process.

Learners have the right to appeal

Learners can formally appeal an assessment decision if they believe it’s unfair. Assessors must use a totally transparent assessment process which provides a trail of evidence to support their decisions.

How appeals work:

  • The learner must appeal to us in writing within 30 days of receiving the assessment result.
  • Our Quality Assurance team oversees a formal review of the appeal.
  • We’ll inform the learner and assessor of the result of the appeal within 15 days of receiving it.

To appeal an assessment decision, learners need to complete the following steps:

  1. Fill out the Assessment Appeals Form
  2. Email the form to: qa@earnlearn-tepukenga.ac.nz
