Health and Safety courses

As part of your apprenticeship, EarnLearn covers the cost of specialist courses booked
within your first three months. If you need to re-sit, repeat, or refresh a course,
the cost will be yours to cover.

What you need to do:

Check your Welcome Email from EarnLearn to see which courses you need to book. Choose a provider from the list below and follow their booking instructions; either click the link provided or call directly. If calling, be sure to mention you’re an EarnLearn apprentice so the course is billed correctly.

When booking, enter your National Student Number (NSN) carefully to ensure your credits are added to your NZQA record. Please note: if you don’t attend a booked course, you’ll be responsible for paying for the next one.

First Aid

Courses that need this course

Trade qualifications that require the completion of this course:

  • Plumbing, Gasfitting & Drainlaying
  • Electrical
  • Scaffolding (Level 4 Apprenticeship only)

If your First Aid certificate is current and listed on your NZQA Record of Learning, you don’t need to repeat the course.

If you only have 6401 & 6402 but your programme also requires 6400, talk to your training provider about bridging options.

Certificates are valid for 2 years. If yours is out of date, you’ll need to complete the full course again (not just a refresher).

After 2 years, your employer decides whether you attend a refresher course. Please note: EarnLearn doesn’t cover this cost.

We recommend doing your First Aid training within the first three months of your apprenticeship, and before you take on Height Safety or Confined Spaces courses.

Book your First Aid training with one of the providers listed below

The course you will book depends on the programme you are doing:

Electrical:  Choose an Essential First Aid course (unit standards 6401 and 6402)

Plumbing, Drainlaying & Gasfitting:  Choose a Comprehensive First Aid course (unit standards 6400, 6401, and 6402)

Scaffolding (Level 4 Apprenticeship only):  Choose a Comprehensive First Aid course (unit standards 6400, 6401, and 6402)

Courses with New Zealand Red Cross must be booked online.  A separate booking is required for each person attending.
